Albert Smith (1816-1860), célèbre conférencier, donne ses premiers spectacles sur le Mont Blanc, à L'Egyptian Hall de Londres, le 15 mars 1852 (jusqu'au 6 juillet 1858). Un chalet suisse était évoqué sur la scène, avec les drapeaux des différents cantons. Smith illustra ses conférences avec des tableaux transparents mobiles et à l'aide de la lanterne magique.
