"The Peterson Color Additive Panel Printers have been specifically designed for high volume color release printing. Two main design concepts of the printer are complete interchangeability with existing color additive printers and bi-directional printing for minimal handling of picture and sound negatives. On the automatic panel printer, the program tape system is the same as is used with most additive color printers. The fact that existing tapes can be used is enhanced by the Peterson design, because the same tape is automatically read in either direction. It is unnecessary to make a forward and reverse tape and loop it together. Two pushbutton speeds are available in a range of 180 to 480 FPM and can be set in the laboratory at the time of installation. Since the machine prints in both directions, the negatives are threaded only once and do not have to be rewound. This also applies to the program tape in the automatic printer. The printing lamp can be either 1000 watt or 1200 watt. It is adjustable and replaceable from the front. Adjustment controls are simple and require only one man, since adjustment targets are visible from the front by opning the vane house door. Printer air-vacuum film cleaners are easier to thread and safer for negatives. The six cleaners clean the picture and sound negative and raw stock before and after printing. They clean both with and against the path of the film, and are designed to completely eliminate any chance of pinching or binding of the film. [...] The additive color panel printer operates on the additive color principle. The light form the single 1000 watt printing lamp is split into red, green and blue color beams by the use of reflecting and transmitting dichroic mirrors. Dichroic mirror separate the white light into three primary color beams of red, green and blue. The mirrors filter out useable wave lenghts and retain the prime color beams. Dichroic mirrors do not deteriorate as do gelatin filters because they are not subject to age and heat spoilage. [...] The picture and sound negatives are enclosed at the bottom of the printer in a plexiglass enclosure. The negative enclosure is illuminated and visible through the plexiglass sliding doors. The operators can see the negatives during printing.
