"When H. A. DeVry first conceived the idea of a portable projector to be self-contained, with no separate parts it was necessary to brush aside all precedent and start along a new line in which there were many obstacles. At that time the Mazda light for projectors had not been thought of, and the only projection equipment on the market used huge carbon arcs and intricate equipment, which made it impossible for the layman to project pictures. The amazement of amateur users may well be imagined, when they were shown a moving picture machine, weighing but 25 pounds, looking like a suit-case and yet capable of absolutely professional results on the screen. Today the DeVry factory is the largest motion picture projector factory in the world. The DeVry picture is rock steady and flickerless, and the DeVry Projector, performing under the most unfavorable conditions, in all climes, is as good at the end of ten years as at the first. The popularity and success which this first machine achieved was tremendous. Almost immediately imitations of this suit-case type of projector began to appear. Cheaper models made to cash in on the DeVry success, began to flood the market. In the midst of this scramble, the DeVry remained true to its first ideals. It refused to adopt the soft metal parts of its rivals, or to substitute fiber gears for its own steel-cut gears hardened in oil. The Portable DeVry is the simplest, smallest and lightest motion picture machine procurable, using standard width film. All controls are on the outside of the case, and the two windows on the side show the film passing through the mechanism head and how much film there is left to project. The Portable DeVry carries the approval of the Board of Underwriters for use with non-inflammable film, and can be used anywhere from any light socket" (The DeVry 35 mm Motion Picture Projectors, Chicago, QRS - DeVry Corporation, c. 1930, p. 21).
