"New photoelectric color meter. Direct readings of color temperature in degrees Kelvin are provided by the new Spectra color meter designed by Karl Freund of Photo Research Corp., 15024 Devonshire St., San Fernando Cal. The meter is pointed at the light source, and a diaphragm is rotated until the pointer is brought opposite a red mark on the scale. This sets up the instrument so red content of the light is taken into consideration. Then a trigger is pulled, which removes a red filter from in front of the photo cell and puts a blue one in its place. Color temperature now can be read direct from the scale. A hemisphere is provided for averaging readings when light of different colors affects the picture" (Populary photography, novembre 1948).

"The Spectra Three-Color Meter is the first complete answer to the problem of measuring the color of light source. It is not only a new precision instrument, of advanced design, it is the embodiment of an entirely new system of measuring and describing the spectral energy distribution of a light source. This system, the result of years of research by Photo Research Corp. engineers, makes possible a new standard of accuracy in the matching of an illuminant to a given standard, for color photography and cinematography, color matching of dyes and pigments, or any purposes for which controlled hue of illumination is essential" (Notice publicitaire Spectra 3 Color Meter, Burbank, Photo Research Corp., 15 janvier 1951).

"The color temperature of a light source is the Kelvin temperature to which a black body would have to be heated in order to give off light of the same color. The Kelvin temperature is measured in degrees centigrade above absolute zero. When we know the color temperature of a light source, we can say exactly how much red, yellow, green, blue and violet is contained in the illumination. Similarly, if we know how much of these colors is in the light, we can compute the color temperature. Fortunately, it is not necessary to follow such a complicated procedure. It is sufficient to measure the amount of any two colors in the light source, and the ratio between those two colors will correspond to one color temperature, and one only.
