INTRODUCTION

The question of playing

In life, as in film, children’s play opens up a free space between fantasy and reality.

This theme runs throughout the entirety of cinema, from slapstick comedy, to musicals or animated films. The work of the workshop groups will allow the participants to discover and identify approaches to several artistic fields. We will look at cinema itself and also the performing arts, especially dance and circus arts. Particular attention will be paid to silent comedy and music.

 As a universal feature of the human experience, play allows us to bear witness to the diversity of the cultural specificities of our countries and areas. 
This year more than 45 groups will work on the project in 14 countries, including Argentina and India, which joins the CCAJ for the first time.

We will ask filmmakers, sensitive to the spirit of playful practice to accompany the screenings for young people which will include:

          - Films with children: Aniki Bobo (Manoel de Oliveira), The Little Fugitive (Ray Ashley, Morris Engel), Visages d'enfants (Jacques Feyder), My Neighbour Totoro (Hayao Miyazaki) , I Was Born, But… (Yasujirô Ozu), Zéro de Conduite (Jean Vigo), Rentrée des classes (Jacques Rozier), Petite lumière (Alain Gomis), Récréations (Claire Simon), Yuki & Nina (Nobuhiro Suwa et Hippolyte Girardot)…

          - Films where the adults play: You Can’t Take it With You (Frank Capra), Pierrot le fou (Jean-Luc Godard), Mon Oncle (Jacques Tati), Solution (Abbas Kiarostami), Kikujiro (Takeshi Kitano), Badlands (Terence Malick), Céline et Julie vont en bateau (Jacques Rivette)…

Play in Cinema

When children play they create their own worlds, their own special space, separate to the rules of the surrounding world, one which reflects both the reality of the world outside and the interior universe of the child itself.

Filmmaking, like children’s play, creates this intermediate space, a free space somewhere between reality and fantasy. The aim of playing, in cinema as in childhood, is to both find and create. In their play a child acts like a director, taking objects from the real world, freeing them from their usual signification and meanings and engaging them in the fiction created in their playing, and thus the film.

We will start by analysing clips from films where the rational logic of the script, its narrative approach, gives way, by and by, to sequences where the characters drop out of the social world and its governing rules, and begin to play like children. These characters are not necessarily children, these are films without children where play has a central role in the creation of the filmic reality.

The film clips will be classified in line with the four types of games and play identified by Roger Caillois: competitive games; games of chance; games of imitation – playing at being anything other than oneself; games of balance, stunning and dizziness.

We will see how cinema gives life and form to these moments of play and how play is a part of creating film itself.
